Mater's Corner: Winter cares

The skies are grey. Its cold and only going to get colder. Northern Florida is about to experience temperatures in the low 20s! While this may be normal weather for the rest of winterdom this is an anomaly for us Floridians (especially us recently relocated from SWFL Floridians). We're hunkering down around here. The quail get a heating lamp.

,The girl bunnies have their burrow, but mama a couple days ago somehow punctured her nose. The side of her face swelled up. Thank God the swelling is starting to go down, but in order to prevent infections possibly spreading to the girls I separated mama Nip into her own cage. At first I gave her access to fresh grass by taking the metal off her cage but she was broken out by morning and enjoying the yards leaves and vines for her breakfast. My husband rescued her. Luckily the pup didn't notice her loose. Now she is hunkered down with a nesting box with towels. The roof's been covered with tarp to keep the wind and chill off. We started a burrow hole for her and she's already dug it deeper. I hope it's enough to keep her snuggly warm.

The second eldest female has been reunited with her sisters after some territorial issues a couple weeks ago. I never wanted to put her back in there, but it's cold and she escaped this am to try and get to the boy side. Bunnies!

The boys are in the huge pen and have a nice cage that we've covered with tarp and pegged down. We dug out a hidey hole for them too to give  them an extra cozy space for the coming cold. Today I noticed that they've made it bigger and deeper! I'm all for burrowing as long as it's not into the neighbor's yard. The boys have a nasty habit of digging burrows right to the neighbors. We had to fill up the holes with bricks and cover that with pavers. The previous owners left a ton of lose bricks, old flagstones, and cinder blocks in the backyard. They've been really handy with the rabbits. I'm praying that we make it through this cold front.
